Steady Momentum for major natural gas infrastructure projects in Eastern Macedonia – Thrace

The CEO, Fr. Zanninotti holds significant discussions with regional institutional representatives regarding the development of the natural gas distribution network – Contracts signed for the connection of 22 municipal buildings

As part of the implementation of Enaon EDA strategic plan for the expansion of natural gas infrastructure, the CEO and executives from the Company conducted a series of visits to the Region of Eastern Macedonia – Thrace (AMTH), with stops in the six cities where significant projects are underway: Orestiada, Drama, Xanthi, Kavala, Komotini and Alexandroupolis.

Specifically, the CEO of Enaon EDA, Mrs. Francesca Zanninotti held targeted meetings with the Regional Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Mr. Christodoulos Toptsidis, the Mayor of Drama, Mr. Giorgos Papadopoulos, and the Mayor of Orestiada, Mr. Adamantios Papadopoulos, aimed at strengthening cooperation with institutional bodies and discussing the issues related to the implementation of the projects. During the key meetings, the CEO presented the Company’s planning for the project implementation, highlighting the importance of efficient coordination of all operations and constructing activities with those carried out or being in progress by regional and municipal authorities. Enaon EDA goal is to fully leverage the available  resources allocated  for the projects in the six cities, aiming to complete them with a focus on minimal disruption to the public and in compliance with current legislation and the strict regulations governing the operation of the Distribution Network Operator.

The meetings took place in a constructive atmosphere, with a shared conclusion that the arrival of natural gas, which is a more economical and more environmentally friendly form of energy, will bring significant benefits to the residents of the border Region, contributing both to the provision of affordable energy and to environmental protection.

The CEO of Enaon EDA, Ms. Francesca Zanninotti, emphasized:

We stand by our partners to address any challenges during the course of the work”.

According to the Regional Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Mr. Christodoulos Topsidis, the collaboration with Enaon EDA is an example of true commitment to local development. The coordinated effort that characterizes the meetings shows that, together, the company and the regional authority can contribute to creating value and effectively promote projects that benefit the remote border communities.

Connection of municipal buildings to the network

Following the aforementioned meetings held by the CEO of Enaon EDA in the AMTH Region, the company proceeded with the signing of contracts for the connection of a total of 22 municipal buildings in Drama, Xanthi and Orestiada to the natural gas distribution network. In this context, 2 school buildings in Drama, 10 school buildings in Xanthi and 10 municipal buildings in Orestiada (9 schools and the Cultural Centre N. Orestiadas) will be energetically upgraded. Next week, the signing of contracts for the connection of municipal buildings in Komotini will follow.Through this collaboration, significant energy and resource savings will be achieved while reducing the environmental footprint of the buildings, contributing to the transition to a sustainable future.

The projects in AMTH

The projects for the development of natural gas distribution networks in the AMTH region have a total budget of €49 million and are co-financed by the Company’s own funds and resources from the Operational Program of the Eastern Macedonia – Thrace Region. With co-financing from Greece and the European Union, the projects started with funds from the NSRF 2014–2020 and will be completed through the Eastern Macedonia – Thrace 2021–2027 Program.

It is worth noting that, as part of the co-financed projects, there is a 100% discount on connection fees for all residential and commercial consumers. 

As part of the projects, a total of 496 kilometers of low- and medium-pressure network will be constructed, along with more than 11,420 connections for residential, commercial, and industrial consumers. After their completion, the Company will maintain its construction activity in the AMTH region with the aim of meeting the demand of citizens.

To date, a total of 263 kilometers of low- and medium-pressure network are under construction in Eastern Macedonia – Thrace, and approximately 4,600 connection agreements have been signed, which are being processed for activation according to the network’s routing and in compliance with the current regulatory framework.

Specifically, in Drama, the construction of the network is in full progress, with intensive work being carried out, aiming to construct 65 new kilometers of low-pressure network and at least 2,200 new consumer connections from the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.

In Xanthi, the Company is making every possible effort to address the delays observed in the previous period due to external factors. It is worth noting that since April, the Company has intensified its construction activity, primarily prioritizing the execution of projects related to connection contracts for end consumers. It is estimated that within one month the company will have completed all contructing activities related to these pending contracts. With regard to new connection contracts, works are progressing with a focus on the construction of service lines and consumer connections on the active network, in accordance with the regulatory framework.

The projects in Kavala are progressing steadily, with the construction of 31 new kilometers of low-pressure network, in Komotini with the construction of 36 new kilometers of network, and in Alexandroupolis with the construction of 51 new kilometers of low-pressure network.

In Orestiada, the construction of the 60 km network has been completed, and the Company is proceeding with dedication in implementing the connections for interested consumers. According to the plan, more than 720 delivery points are expected to be constructed in 2025, with over 2,640 delivery points to be completed by the end of 2029.

Enaon EDA places particular importance on open communication and collaboration with its stakeholders, enhancing transparency and trust with the local communities in which it invests, with the aim of creating long-term value. Connecting to the natural gas network is a development lever for these cities and an improvement in the quality of life for citizens, with energy, economic, and environmental benefits.
