Τhe residents and all stakeholders were informed about the progress of the implementation of the network and the benefits of the use of natural gas – In September, the supply of the first part of the city
An initiative to inform the local community of Karpenisi about the arrival of natural gas in the region was undertaken by Hellenic Gas Distribution Company Enaon EDA, a subsidiary of Enaon of the Italgas Group, and the Region of Central Greece. The supply of the first part of the city with natural gas is scheduled for September 2025, offering households and businesses in the area access to a cleaner, more economical, and more reliable energy source as early as this winter.
The initiative to inform the local community was successfully held yesterday, Thursday, 12 June 2025, in Karpenisi, in the presence of the CEO of Enaon EDA, Ms. Francesca Zanninotti, the Regional Governor of Central Greece, Mr. Fanis Spanos, the Mayor of Karpenisi, Mr. Christos Kakavas, the President of the Chamber of Evritania, Mr. Christos Tsambras, representatives of the region’s political and social life, as well as a large number of citizens. The event was also attended by the Bishop of Karpenisi, Mr. Georgios.
The aim was to provide the residents of Karpenisi and all stakeholders with the opportunity to learn about the natural gas distribution network development plan in the area, the connection process to the network, as well as the benefits of using natural gas across all sectors (residential, commercial, and industrial).
Natural gas can serve as a “bridge” to a more sustainable future as it can reduce energy costs by up to 40% compared to traditional fuels, and significantly lower emissions. At the same time, the infrastructure that are underway are ready not just for the distribution of natural gas, but also for the integration of renewable gases like biomethane, thus contributing to the prosperity of the local community and enhancing the goals for sustainable development.
The CEO of Enaon EDA, Ms. Francesca Zanninotti, emphasized during her speech:
“ We are honoured to be in Karpenisi to inform the residents and all stakeholders on the gas distribution network development project we are developing in the region. This initiative, which was implemented in cooperation with the Region of Central Greece, marks an important beginning, demonstrating our commitment to maintain open channels of communication with local communities in all the areas where we operate. Our goal is not only to build an infrastructure. We stand by the residents to give answers to their energy needs, implementing the project in full coordination with all interested parties and with the least possible disruption. Therefore the engagement of the community is essential. And when community is informed, involved and prepared, the transition to natural gas becomes not just a technical achievement, but a shared success. The development of the network in Karpenisi is in full progress and in September 2025 we are planning to supply the first part of the city with natural gas, providing residents with the opportunity to enjoy energy solutions that contribute to the sustainable development of the region, while strengthening the local economy by the creation of indirect jobs. I would like to extend my warmest thanks to the Regional Governor Mr. Spanos for the continue collaboration, to the Mayor Mr. Kakavas for for his willingness to support the project, as well as all representatives from local authorities, institutions and stakeholders.”
From his side, the Regional Governor of Central Greece, Mr. Fanis Spanos, noted:
“The works for the expansion of the natural gas distribution network are gradually being completed in Lamia, Chalkida, Livadia, Livadia, Thebes, Amfissa, as well as in Karpenisi, where we were yesterday to inform the citizens about the benefits and the incentives for the connection to the 22 km network that is now under construction. The total project has a budget of 47.350.000 euros, of which 21.200.000 euros is financed by the NSRF of the Region of Central Greece. We are moving forward dynamically to expand the network to other cities in Central Greece. Our goal is to provide access to a cleaner and more efficient form of energy to even more of the citizens. Making the Region of Central Greece greener, more efficient and competitive“.
The Mayor of Karpenisi, Mr. Christos Kakavas underlined:“ We are pleased to welcome natural gas to Karpenisi, in a mountainous area where low temperatures prevail and the energy needs of the residents are increased. The arrival of natural gas will provide the region’s households and businesses with affordable energy, while contributing to environmental protection. We are in constant communication with Enaon EDA to ensure the project is planned and implemented in a coordinated manner with minimal disturbance to citizens”. Also, the Mayor of Karpenisi expressed his satisfaction with the project’s progress, and encouraged those citizens who wish so, to express their interest in connecting to the gas distribution network at this stage, as it will minimize the disturbance in the areas of the network development and, at the same time, will not burden the road network with additional cuts after the completion of the construction project.
The natural gas distribution infrastructure development project in Karpenisi and Amfissa, led by Enaon EDA, has a total budget of approximately €4 million and is co-financed by the company’s own funds and resources from the NSRF, through the Operational Programme of the Region of Central Greece. With the co-financing of Greece and the European Union, the project began with funding from the NSRF 2014–2020 and will be completed through the Central Greece 2021–2027 Programme.
In Karpenisi, 6.5 km of natural gas distribution network have already been constructed, while an additional 22 km are planned for its expansion.
Interest in connecting to the network is high. To date, more than 140 applications and expressions of interest have been submitted, indicating the local community’s trust in this new energy solution.
It is noted that, under the co-financed project, there is a 100% discount on connection fees for all residential and commercial consumers.
Karpenisi is one of six cities in the Region of Central Greece along with Amfissa, Livadeia, Lamia, Chalkida, and Thebes where sustainable energy infrastructure is being developed, led by Enaon EDA with the support of the Region of Central Greece. These developments offer solutions that support local communities and lead toward a greener future.
