Network Digitalization

Enaon is deeply committed to reducing its environmental footprint, particularly focusing on methane emissions from network operations. To achieve this ambitious goal, we have adopted innovative technologies and strategies to foster a cleaner, greener energy future. Alongside this digital journey, we prioritize safety and efficiency, adopting cutting-edge technologies and innovative processes.

Since early 2023, we have implemented the advanced Picarro Leak Detection technology, which offers more accurate and reliable methane emission measurements compared to traditional methods. In 2023, Picarro technology was implemented to inspect approximately 9,000 km of pipelines in Greece. This technology is part of a broader Italgas Group initiative to significantly reduce emissions.

The Picarro Surveyor technology enhances leak detection speed and sensitivity, allowing for more extensive coverage and a substantial reduction in methane emissions. The system utilizes advanced hardware, software, and data analytics to monitor and manage natural gas infrastructure.

Italgas is a pioneer in promoting the adoption of renewable gas solutions like biomethane and hydrogen. To support this vision, the Group has allocated around €1.8 billion in its 2023-2029 Strategic Plan for the digitization of both the Italian and Greek distribution networks. This investment aims to facilitate the integration of green gas into the network. Enaon, following Italgas’ lead, is actively transforming its distribution network with a digital identity. This digital transformation will unlock significant benefits for the network, including improved efficiency, reliability, and the ability to accommodate renewable gases.

Enaon has invested significantly in digitizing its network infrastructure. This involves installing Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), sensors, and actuators, all of which are integrated into a centralized Remote-Control System. The goal is to achieve 100% asset digitization by 2025 and full monitoring through the DANA4Greece platform by 2026.

Developed by Italgas and Bludigit, DANA (Digital Advanced Network Automation) is a centralized system that enables 24/7 remote monitoring and control of the network. DANA provides valuable data and insights, including gas pressure and volume measurements, odorization levels, and various signals and alarms.

Italgas has also introduced a new smart meter, Nimbus, which is designed to improve performance and ensure safety. Compatible with hydrogen, Nimbus leverages state-of-the-art communication technology, environmentally sustainable design, and operational efficiency.

The gradual integration of Nimbus technology in Greece aligns with Italgas’ commitment to innovation and sustainability, contributing to a more efficient and environmentally friendly energy distribution network.
