Construction works will continue beyond the completion of the co-financed projects, ensuring the coverage of the energy needs of Central Greece

Enaon EDA, a subsidiary of Enaon of the Italgas Group, proceeded with the activation of the first section of the natural gas distribution network in Amfissa, marking the completion of a significant chapter in the energy upgrade of the Region of Central Greece. After Chalkida, Thebes, Lamia, Livadeia and Karpenisi, Amfissa constitutes the sixth and final “station” of the company’s project for the Region of Central Greece, offering households and businesses in the area access to a more modern, more resilient and cleaner form of energy.

The natural gas flame-lighting ceremony in Amfissa was held yesterday by the CEO of Enaon EDA, Ms. Francesca Zanninotti, in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Justice and Member of Parliament for Fokida, Mr. Ioannis Bougas, the Regional Governor of Central Greece, Mr. Fanis Spanos, the Mayor of Delphi, Mr. Panagiotis Tagalis, as well as representatives of local authorities.

The CEO of Enaon EDA, Ms. Francesca Zanninotti, emphasized:
“With the activation of the natural gas distribution network in Amfissa, an important cycle of our planning for Central Greece is completed, as natural gas is now a reality in all six cities where we operate, creating new prospects for the region’s residents. With the unwavering support of the Region of Central Greece and the co-financed infrastructure projects, a total of 265 kilometers of network and dedicated infrastructure for hospitals, municipal buildings, facilities and industrial areas have already been constructed. In fact, in Central Greece, the network supplies the largest part of Greek industry, with 96 industries using natural gas. The company is committed to continuing its mission even after the completion of the co-funded projects, ensuring that the energy needs of the region are effectively met with a view to creating sustainable value in local communities”.

The Deputy Minister of Justice and Member of Parliament for Fokida, Mr. Ioannis Bougas, stressed:
Natural gas in Amfissa is essentially the first major energy infrastructure. Domestic consumers, businesses, and public facilities in the city will have clean and efficient energy with positive consequences for the environment and the economy. At the same time, there are significant opportunities for the development of local professional activity related to connections. Undoubtedly, the natural gas flame we have lit can illuminate a new era for Amfissa and Fokida”.

The Regional Governor of Central Greece, Mr. Fanis Spanos, stated:
We lit the natural gas flame in Amfissa too! After Chalkida, Thebes, Lamia, Livadia, and Karpenisi, it is now time for households and businesses in the region to gain access to a more modern, more sustainable, and cleaner form of energy! We are now completing a long-term plan, in which we dared to take the lead and co-finance the project from our Region’s NSRF. This was an absolutely catalytic and crucial move to build a total of 265 kilometers of network in Central Greece, as well as dedicated infrastructure for hospitals and industrial areas”.

The Mayor of Delphi, Mr. Panagiotis Tagalis, noted:
“Today is a very important day for the city of Amfissa, one of those days that mark a clear dividing line between the past and the future of a local community. The arrival of natural gas constitutes a development project and an immediate boost to the local economy, giving households and businesses the opportunity to plan the servicing of their needs under new conditions. At the same time, as a region, we contribute in yet another way to improving our environmental footprint, turning to more environmentally friendly energy resources. We thank everyone who worked to reach today’s milestone for Amfissa, the company Enaon EDA that developed the distribution network in Amfissa, as well as the Region of Central Greece, which proved to be a valuable partner and co-financier for the implementation of the project.”

With the activation of the first section of the network in Amfissa, the connection of the first consumers also begins. To date, approximately 7 kilometers of network have been constructed, while an additional 10 kilometers are scheduled to be built within the year, aiming to cover nearly 50% of the city’s population. Works will continue in the coming period in order to further expand the network and meet the energy needs of the area.

The project for the development of natural gas distribution infrastructure in Amfissa and Karpenisi, led by Enaon EDA, has a total budget of €3.97 million and is co-financed by the company’s own funds and resources from the NSRF, through the Operational Programme of the Region of Central Greece. Co-financed by Greece and the European Union, the project started with resources from the 2014–2020 NSRF and will be completed through the Central Greece 2021–2027 Programme.

In all six cities of the Region of Central Greece where the company operates, co-financed network construction projects amounting to €22 million have already been implemented, out of a total program exceeding €36 million. This is a modern and reliable energy network that serves the needs of local communities through the use of natural gas today and lays the foundations for tomorrow’s energy system, with the capability to utilize renewable gases such as biomethane.

In Chalkida and Thebes, the network has already been almost fully completed. In Lamia, Livadeia and Karpenisi, the infrastructure has been developed and a significant part of the network has been activated and continues to expand. According to the company’s plan, more than 23,000 consumers in Central Greece will be connected to the network by 2030.

It is noted that, within the framework of the co-financed projects, all residential and commercial consumers benefit from a 100% discount on connection fees.
