Speaking at Athens Energy Summit, the CEO of Enaon underlined that the digital transformation of the networks in Greece will enhance the flexibility of the energy system
The crucial role that gas infrastructure plays in ensuring affordable energy costs and supporting the energy transition, driving the decarbonisation of the economy and consumption in line with the climate targets set by the European Union, was pointed out by Ms. Barbara Morgante , CEO of Enaon of Italgas Group, during “Athens Energy Summit” held in February 5, 2025.
Ms. Morgante participated among distinguished speakers, such as the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy Mrs. Alexandra Sdoukou, in the thematic session “Renewed perspectives for the role of oil and gas in the Mediterranean”, moderated by the journalist Mrs. Ritsa Bizogli.
“Digital transformation of the gas infrastructure is a crucial driver for decarbonising the energy sector and advancing renewable gases. In Greece, we are developing a smart, digital, and flexible network that can accommodate biomethane, and, in the longer term, hydrogen. This will enhance the flexibility and resilience of the entire energy system, enabling diversification of sources, decarbonisation of consumption and greater efficiency and economy” Ms. Morgante highlighted.
She also underlined that gas infrastructure is crucial in order to overcome the energy trilemma, as it provides a cost-effective solution that ensures energy security and supports energy transition. Gas distribution networks that Enaon manages, through its subsidiary Enaon EDA, are capable of meeting the multiple energy needs of the consumers -residential, commercial and industrial- strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure.
Natural Gas networks are a vital infrastructure for enhancing the flexibility of the country’s energy system, which is already facing challenges due to the intenrmittency of electricity generation from renewable sources. Thanks to their flexibility and the continuous flow of gas they allow, they contribute to streghening the stability of the energy system, by providing reliable solutions for managing energy demand, particulalry during periods of high volatility. At the same time, the existing and highly developed natural gas networks’ infrastructure is available to accommodate and distribute biomethane immediately and hydrogen later in time, offering additional decarbonisation solutions for both industry and residential heating.
Having already achieved significant milestones, Enaon is ready to face future challenges and continues to develop as a key player in the Greek energy sector. Today, through its subsidiary Enaon EDA, Enaon manages around 8,000 kilometers of network across the country, with 615,000 active delivery points. Through the new investments, the company plans to develop projects in new areas, targeting 11,000 km of network and about 1 million consumers by 2030.
Implementing an ambitious investment program in Greece, worth €1 billion, as part of the Italgas Group’s 2024-2030 Strategic Plan, Enaon is ” shielding” the country with sustainable gas infrastructure that aims to meet the evolving energy needs of end consumers and has a positive impact on the planet, people and the economic system.
